The church of the Prophet Elijah was the first church in the village. Originally it was a small chapel, located on the western forecourt of the present church, on the spot where the stairs are today. This precinct was burnt down during the Orlov Revolt. Ten years later it was built again in a larger form, by people from Messanias and Barbalias, with carved cornerstones, doors and windows, and with a paved courtyard.
In 1904-1905 the church fell down and in its place was built the present, magnificent metropolitan church, on the initiative of father Yannis and the inhabitants of the two districts of Messanias and Barbalias. To plaster the structure a kiln was opened, to which all the inhabitants brought wood to keep alight. The construction was completed in 1932.
